Breaded Tofu Steaks

Breaded Tofu Steaks

Sometimes you just need a meal that feels wholesome. As a vegan, I eat a lot of “bowl meals,” meaning I throw a bunch of veggies and carbs into a bowl and eat it. It’s always filling and nutritious, but doesn’t exactly feel like I’m eating a proper sit-down meal. These breaded tofu steaks make for an easy, weeknight vegan meal that would be perfect for a family dinner or date night. They’re low maintenance, while also feeling a bit elevated. You can dress them up with well planned side dishes, or simply eat them like chicken nuggets––it’s totally up to you!

Breaded Tofu Steaks

2 tablespoons cornstarch (for dusting the tofu)

Wet ingredients:

  • 3 tablespoons vegan mayo

  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard

  • 1 teaspoon apple cider vinegar

  • ¼ cup soy milk (or any plant milk)

Dry ingredients:

  • 1 ¼ cup panko breadcrumbs (check the ingredients to be sure it’s vegan)

  • ½ teaspoon salt

  • ¼ teaspoon pepper

  • 1 tablespoon nutritional yeast

  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder

  • ½ teaspoon cornstarch

  1. Press the tofu in a tofu press (or wrapped in paper towels with a heavy object on top) in the fridge overnight. The tofu should be firm and much drier the next day.

  2. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees.

  3. Cover a baking sheet with foil and lightly spray with nonstick spray.

  4. Set up your three step dredging station: On one plate, pour the 2 tablespoons of cornstarch on it. In a bowl, combine the wet ingredients. On your last plate, combine the dry ingredients.

  5. Slice the tofu blocks into strips about ½ thick.

  6. Take the tofu and lightly dust it with the cornstarch on the first plate. Then, dunk the tofu into the wet mix. Once the tofu is well coated (you may have to scrape some wet mix off if it’s too thick), place the strip into the dry mix. Press down firmly to make sure the breadcrumbs stick and are distributed in an even layer.

  7. Once the tofu is coated in dry mix, transfer it to the baking sheet. Complete step 6 until all tofu steaks are coated.

  8. Lightly spray the steaks with cooking spray. Transfer to the oven and bake for 35 minutes, or until crispy and golden brown.
